The Efficacy of Feeding Programs as Poverty Alleviation Strategy in Primary Schools: a case of Mabvuku Tafara
Abstract
The aim of this dissertation was to find out whether or not the School Feeding Programme had
alleviated poverty in Tafara and Mabvuku Primary schools. Three objectives that guided this
study dissertation were: To examine the challenges faced in the implementation of School Feeding
Programmes in Tafara and Mabvuku ,To find out the effectiveness of School Feeding Programmes
in Tafara and Mabvuku ,and to find out the intervention strategies in SFP.. Data were collected
using questionnaire, interview, and focus group discussion. The analysis involved frequencies of
particular responses which were presented using tables and graphs. The study sample was 97,
comprising 5school committee members, 26 parents,27 teachers, 38 pupils, and 1 District
education officer. Sample random, purposive and snowball procedures respectively were used to
select the respondents. The findings of the study showed some of the challenges was insecurity,
theft, lack of water and other essentials such as fuel and manpower. Also it was noted that an
increase in school enrolment and attendance and modest have achieved due SFPs and few schools
noticed static in terms of school enrolment and attendance due poverty, long distance and poor
negative attitude towards education. The study recommended that the government through should
expand and improve school infrastructure and encouraged parents to build the culture of
contributing for proper implementation of the SFPs.
